Art in the Cafe Now Showing: Jessica McDonald Jessica McDonald is native artist from Morgantown, West Virginia. She recently graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. With a background in Art History, Jessica studies a multitude of contemporary and traditional artists and art movements that she applies to her paintings. With a studio concentration in painting, she has developed multiple skills in various medias including sculpture, printmaking, photography, and figure studies. Currently she is working independently on her paintings and continues to explore and progress in her artistic career. Her most recent body of work embodies the idea of intertwining the duality of traditional techniques to a contemporary subject matter. While taking cues from the Rococo era she creates edible landscape sculptures of confectionary sweets and then documents the temporary structures in a Photorealistic painting. As paintings, these abstract euphoric landscapes give the viewers a glimpse of a fantasy world that invites the imagination to take flight. Yet, as the viewers indulge themselves in the multiple layers of confectionary sweets, their sensorial experience progresses from sensual to sinful. In the over abundance of candy and cakes one gives into the temptation of gluttonous desires, even addictive fixations.
